Purple Heart Medal Carving

Recently, Dennis Zongker has completed this beautiful replica with precise accuracy. This replica scales 7 times the original size and required 160 hours to create. It has 5 coats of hand polished polyurethane, giving a deep lustrous finish, so that the natural beauty of the wood can be seen. The medal boasts 3 layers of 23K German Gold Leaf on front and back, adding the finishing touches to this unique carving of our nations most prestigious Medal of Honor.

Purple heart hardwood is one of the world’s most unique woods that are truly purple in natural color. This exotic wood undergoes a degree of color change over time.  It begins with a dull brown when freshly carved or sanded, but within a few days it oxidizes to a violet purple. It is found in the tropical regions of Central America and South America.
