"72 Note Music Box"

2011 "CWB National Design Portfolio People's Choice" Award Winner

I wanted to have a musical theme throughout and to have the veneers flow nicely from the inside of the box to the outside. By using veneers and their natural colors and grain, I was able to make the marquetry look as things look in the real world. I used a clear coat natural lacquer to bring out the natural qualities of the wood. By matching up the front and corners and sides and the back with maple burl veneer it looks like one piece of veneer all the way around the music box. The black inlays around the trim and top lid and segmented feet I used Macassar Ebony. The veneers I used, "Holly, Macassar Ebony, Dyed black Maple, Flat Cut Walnut, Flat Cut African Mahogany, Bloodwood, and Maple Burl."

The marquetry for the violins on the outside of the top I used Flat Cut African Mahogany. The inside of the  top I used Bloodwood for the Violins that way when you open up the lid to hear the music, you can see the same marquetry but in a different color of wood.

The Lyre Harp on the front adds to the music theme giving the music box the finishing touch. The harp is made out of flamed birch hardwood,

Ebony for the fret board.
The music movement consists of three melodies, “March of the Wooden Soldiers”, “Waltz of the Flowers,” and “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy

I put the sound holes on the bottom and back of the box; it makes the 72 note movement sound clean and crisp. It also brings out the bass and treble and makes
